The fishing rod is the angler's most important tool. Yet, it can be one of the most confusing purchases we make.

Take a look at some of our choices;
  • slow, medium, and fast action rod blanks
  • line weight and lure weight classes
  • SiC, stainless, silicon nitride, and roller guides
  • offshore, inshore, nearshore
  • cork, composite, and foam grips
Most of us have a garage full of trial-and-error fishing rods that didn't quiet meet the task at hand!

This month's tag-team talk will take the guess work out of your next rod purchase. In fact, you may even be inspired to attempt a custom rod build yourself...or, at the very least, special order a custom made rod to your specifications!

Retired physics professor and avid inshore/offshore angler Russ Roy will discuss the physics of fishing rods. Russ will clarify some of our options from the confusing list above, and help match the technology to the type of fishing the angler wants to pursue.

Custom rod builder Billy McDaniel, owner of BillyStix Rods Custom Fishing Rods, will tell us how to build that special rod...or what to ask for when ordering a custom rod from a professional rod builder.
