When: August 18
Bad weather make-up date: August 19
Where: Crystal River - Fort Island Trail ramp
The ramp is located some 4.5 miles from US19 on W Fort Island Trail. There is a second ramp located at the end of W Fort Island Trail (9 miles from US 19 and not very far from Shell Island), but access to the channel from there involves negotiating a bunch of shallow water full of oyster bars.
Target: Scallops - the other Big Bend white meat

The annual GOFC Scallop Outing is here again! Time to trade rod and reel for snorkel and mask. Early reports are good, so gather the family, pack a good lunch, and join the scallop hunt.

The plan will go something like this:
  • Meet Capt. Charlie Courtney on the river near the Fort Island Trail public boat ramp at 9:00 A.M. Charlie will lead the group to the most productive scallop grounds. Late arrivals can hail the GOFC flotilla on VHF 71 for a current location.
  • Frolic with the scallops
  • Return to Shell Island for lunch - bring your own sandwiches and drinks (about 1:00 PM)
  • Relax and generally be friendly with fellow GOFC members
GOFC members "in-the-know" will scout the area in advance and promise numerous humongous scallops - better check the weight limits on your boat!

Scallop Outing communication will be on VHF channel 71.
